The internationally active architecture firm PERATHONER ARCHITECTS, based in the South Tyrolean municipality of Wolkenstein, has been growing steadily since 2004 and was founded by architect Rudolf Perathoner.
Rudolf Perathoner was born in 1975 and attended the art school in Ortisei. He studied architecture at the Leopold-Franzens University in Innsbruck, Austria.
The studio now consists of a ten-strong team, whose highly motivated members contribute their professional experience gained at home and abroad and their in-depth expertise to the planning processes tailored to the individual wishes of each client. The range of services covers all development phases of a successful construction project, from the basic evaluation to the design and implementation planning, right through to construction management and turnkey handover of a property. The projects already realised, some of which are international, cover a broad typological spectrum with a focus on hotel and private residential construction, as well as lift facilities in a high alpine context.

Hotel Grandbaita
The third-generation family-run Hotel Granbaita is located in the centre of Selva di Val Gardena, surrounded by the impressive peaks of the South Tyrolean Dolomites. These are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and have been a popular holiday destination for international holidaymakers for decades, both in summer and winter.
Since its construction in the 1960s, the hotel has undergone countless structural extensions, modernisations and restructurings, so that in 2019 it was time to give the main building with reception, bar and dining room, as well as the wellness area, a uniform and architecturally contemporary appearance as part of a core refurbishment. To this end, the existing balconies and wooden panelling, the roof and a glass conservatory were demolished and replaced. An elegantly curved, single-storey structure now forms the urban link between the main building and the extension building towards the valley and accommodates the reception area, bar, lounge, dining room and the new gourmet area.
With its floor-to-ceiling glazing and the characteristic wooden panelling of the attic, the extension has become the new architectural trademark of the entire Hotel Granbaita. Its upgrading to a 5-star hotel not only reflects the simple, elegant façade made of dark larch wood, but also the high-quality materials used for the architecturally timeless interior design, such as smoked oak wood, grey natural stone and local fabric covers that set colourful accents. The atmospherically harmonious design concept is not only continued in the wellness area, which has been technically refurbished to the latest standards, but also in the 35 luxurious rooms and suites, which were also redesigned as part of the refurbishment.
Linder Cycling Hotel
The Linder Cycling Hotel is located in the village centre of Selva di Val Gardena, right in the heart of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. The breathtaking landscape with spectacular views of the majestic mountain massifs and the central location at the foot of the Sassolungo and Sella massifs have made the village an ideal holiday destination for decades. The picturesque village has always been popular as a summer holiday destination for hikers and those seeking relaxation. Since the start of winter sports tourism in the 1960s, it has also attracted thousands of skiers every year with its countless groomed ski slopes and cross-country ski trails against a picturesque backdrop.
And this is exactly where the success story of Hotel Linder begins.
The house was built in 1964 by Elisabeth Linder and her son Luis, the current senior manager. For over five decades, Luis successfully guided the fortunes of the steadily growing family business, including various renovation and remodelling measures.
After a generational change in the hotel management and the purchase of a neighbouring property, the idea was born in 2015 to expand the traditional hotel and give it an image makeover in order to prepare it for the constantly advancing developments in tourism and the high demands of holiday guests.
Junior boss Günther and his wife Nicole entrusted Perathoner Architects with this responsible task.
The design envisaged the extensive preservation of the existing building fabric and its extension on the newly acquired property, all “wrapped” in a contemporary and architecturally uniform wooden façade.
The new reception, two back offices, a separate event room and several lounge areas, which also form the transition to the bar and restaurant area in the existing building, were created on the ground floor of the extension.
This was completely gutted to make room for the new centrepiece of the hotel, the “LUIS EATERY” restaurant named after the hotel founder. This consists of a central bar, a wine tasting room, the spacious dining room and a traditional “Tyrolean parlour”. The hotel kitchen has also been extended and brought up to the latest technical standards.
The upper floors house a total of 42 guest rooms and suites, some of which have been newly built and some of which have been completely renovated in order to fulfil every wish in terms of comfort and design.
However, the undisputed architectural highlight of the Linder Cycling Hotel is without question the spacious wellness area on the top floor of the extension, which includes a large panoramic sauna, a steam bath, a relaxation room and the floor-level “Skypool”.
In addition to the aesthetically harmonious combination of the old and new buildings, the main challenges to be overcome during the planning phase were the layout of the building plot and, more precisely, the need to accommodate 35 car parking spaces in the extension in addition to the desired premises. This was achieved in four underground storeys, which required an excavation more than 12 metres deep and technically challenging due to the immediate location next to the road and the existing building.
In addition to the urbanistic and structural solutions, Rudi Perathoner’s team also developed the entire interior design, which is based on a coherent and holistic design concept. From the lighting design to the detailing of the interior design and furnishings to the choice of materials, colours and fabrics used, no detail was left to chance and all elements were perfectly coordinated.
